This Day That Age
The Chinese Government has ordered back thousands of peasants pouring into the cities from the rural areas, where millions are suffering from famine. A directive published in the official Communist newspaper Kwangming Daily said their migration to the cities would lead to "social chaos" and affect the Spring sowing if steps were not taken to deter them. "In certain areas the situation is assuming serious proportions with each passing day," according to the directive, published jointly by the Interior and Labour Ministries. It ordered Government propaganda officials to tell the peasants that economic reconstruction in the cities had only just begun and a large number of workers were not yet required.
