Attack on police: 40 held

KASARAGOD, MARCH 23. The police took into custody 40 persons in connection with a late night violence at Karanthakad, near here, on Monday.

The trouble started when a police team which was escorting a procession taken out from the nearby Mallikarjuna Temple booked some anti-social elements. Provoked by the action, some people pelted the policemen with stones. A couple of policemen were injured and the front glass of a police jeep was smashed in the attack. The police had to fire five rounds of plastic pellets in the air to disburse the mob.

The SP, P. Vijayan, and other police officers rushed to the spot and the situation was brought under control by 3 a.m. today.
