Hamas leader's killing condemned

By Our Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE, MARCH 23 . Muslim organisations here have responded with shock and anger to the news of the assassination of the Hamas leader, Sheik Ahmed Yassin, by Israel. The Kerala chapter of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, its youth wing, the Solidarity Youth Movement, and the National Development Front (NDF) condemned the killing in separate statements today.

A demonstration was held this evening in the city under the banner of Solidarity Youth Movement to condemn Yassin's assassination and Israel's continuing attacks on the Palestine people.

The NDF chairman, E. Sayed, said that liberation struggles of the kind happening in Palestine could not be put down through political killings. Liberation movements had never been crushed by the use of force, he said adding that Yassin's life and martyrdom would remain a threat to Israel forever.

Deploring the slaying of the spiritual leader of Hamas, the Amir of Kerala chapter of the Jamaat-e-Islamic Hind, K. A. Siddique Hassan, remarked that Yassin, the martyr, would remain a bigger threat and challenge to imperialism and Zionist forces than he was before his assassination. The Amir also appealed to the people the world over to rise as one to condemn the brutal killing of Yassin and went on to say that "it is hypocritical of those who do not have the guts to stand up to condemn State terrorism to discredit liberation movements by characterising them as a militant activity".

The Solidarity Youth Movement in its statement called for a well-orchestrated and joint endeavour by all countries to isolate Israel, which he alleged was perpetrating atrocities on Palestine people with the support of the United States.
