Tarkunde dead

NEW DELHI, MARCH 23. Eminent jurist and champion of human rights, Justice V.M. Tarkunde, died here on Monday after prolonged illness. He was 94.

The former Prime Minister, I.K. Gujral, the Law Minister, Arun Jaitley, and the Attorney-General, Soli Sorabjee, were among the large number of legal luminaries and social activists present at the last rites for Mr. Tarkunde this afternoon.

The Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, Justice A.S. Anand, described Mr. Tarkunde as a great social activist, a jurist of repute, a champion of human rights and a defender of the downtrodden.Surendra Mohan, former Member of Parliament and national convener of the Socialist Front, described Mr. Tarkunde as one who had dedicated his entire life to the humanist movement. He was the pioneer of the struggle for the defence of civil liberties and human rights. In September 1976, Mr. Tharkunde started the People's Union for Civil Liberties and Democratic Rights.

He was awarded the International Humanist Award in 1978 by the International Humanist and Ethics Union and the Humanist Laureate by the American Academy of Humanism in 1984.
