Be wary of Opposition propaganda, Mulayam tells party men

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW, MARCH 23. The Samajwadi Party leader and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, today chided Opposition leaders who insinuated that there was an understanding between him and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Speaking at a function to celebrate the birth anniversary of the late socialist leader, Ram Manohar Lohia, organised by the Lohia Trust here, Mr. Yadav said such insinuations would only strengthen the BJP.

The SP leader declared that the last battle in India against communalism would be fought in the plains of the Ganga and Yamuna. Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura were situated here and the responsibility of fighting communal forces had fallen on the Samajwadi Party.Mr. Yadav asked his party workers to be wary of the propaganda of the saffron forces. ``They are experts in telling lies and you must be on your guard against their designs'', he said.

He reiterated his stand on a confederation of India and Pakistan. The governments of the two countries could never ensure cordial relations as the political leaders were only interested in retaining their power. The people of the two countries must join hands to bring about an improvement in ties. He was for free movement of the peoples of the two countries and there should be no need for passports.

The SP leader said that while consolidating his position in Uttar Pradesh, he would this time pay more attention to Bihar.

Mr. Yadav urged the workers to put aside their differences and work hard to ensure the victory of the party's candidates. Rivalry during the last Assembly elections had done considerable harm to the party. There were complaints this time too over the selection of candidates. But the decisions were his own and the party workers should accept all nominations ungrudgingly, he said.
