Meet on Basava Dharma

CHITRADURGA MARCH 23. The first all-India convention of Basava Dharma will be held at Koodala Sangama on May 1 and 2. Shivamurthy Murugharajendra Sharana of Sri Murugha Math told presspersons here on Tuesday that 20,000 followers of Basavanna were expected to participate in the convention aimed at popularising the Basava Dharma. Heads of various religious institutions, thinkers, researchers, scholars, and Dalit leaders would participate in the convention. The convention would be organised by Basava kendras, Basava organisations, and various maths. Topics such as the future of Basava Dharma and Shiva yoga would be discussed during the convention. Similar conventions would be held in various cities from next year, he said.

Title for Kadri Gopalnath

MANGALORE MARCH 23. The Sangeetha Parishat, Mangalore, will honour Kadri Gopalnath, saxophone artiste, with the Sangeeth Samart title here on March 28. Addressing a press conference here today, the secretary of the parishat, C.R. Ballal, and the organising secretary, P. Nithyananda Rao, said the award comprised Rs. 25,000 and a silver memento. Mr. Gopalnath had been chosen for the award in recognition of his contribution to Carnatic classical music. Nagesh A. Bappanadu, Nadaswara artiste, would also be felicitated on the occasion. Vishvesha Theertha Swamiji of Pejavar Math, Udupi, S.N. Ramaprasad, managing trustee of Ramaseva Mandali, Bangalore, K. Diwakar, Mangalore Mayor, N. Yogish Bhat, MLA, and A. Eshwarayya, president, Sangeeth Sangama Parthisthana, Mangalore, would attend the function. They said the function was being held as part of the decennial celebrations of the parishat. A Carnatic vocal concert by Nisha P. Rajgopal would be held to mark the occasion. The function was being held in association with the Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Mangalore, they added.

Convention on printing

MANGALORE MARCH 23. The Department of Printing and Media Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal, will organise the biennial international convention on printing, "Vectra 2004'', from Thursday to Saturday. A press release from the department stated that there would be seminars and presentations by international and Indian leaders of print industry. The aim of the convention was to highlight the latest developments in graphics industry. An exhibition on printing technology would be held. The speakers at the convention included Willi Burckhart, Stefan Seggar (KBA, Germany); G. Krishnamurthy, general manager, Deccan Herald; Ramprasad, assistant vice-president, Citibank; Stevens and Girish Krishnamurthy, technical consultants, Hewlett Packard; Roland Bangerter, managing director, Mullar Martini; Ole S. Rasmussen, managing director, Heidelberg, Germany; and Zianne Farssi, area manager, Asia Pacific, Nipson. Companies such as HP, Technova Imaging Systems and Leibenger would sponsor the event. Law students' meet

SHIMOGA MARCH 23. The first State-level law students' conference will be held here on March 27 and 28 under the auspices of the Kuvempu University Law Students' Association and the National College of Law. The president of the association, A.M. Ujjanappa, told presspersons on Tuesday that the Governor of Bihar, M. Rama Jois, would inaugurate the conference in which 1,500 law students were expected to participate. The Secretary of the National Education Society, Girimaji N. Rajgopal, and the Principal of the National College of Law, Shimoga, Satyamurthy, would be the chief guests of the inaugural session. Mr. Ujjannappa said the conference would have two sessions. The Principal of the SJM Law College, Chitradurga, Chitrashekar, the president of the Shimoga Bar Association, K. Basappa, the Registrar (Evaluation) of Kuvempu University, Manjunath Naik, the Principal of the University Law College, C.S. Patel, the Principal of the M.K. Srinivas Shetty Law College, Chikmagalur, Venkatachalapathy Swamy, would participate.
