PW naxal killed in encounter

ANANTAPUR, MARCH 24. A naxalite belonging to the People's War was killed and another escaped in an exchange of fire with the police near Venkatapuram village of Ramagiri mandal in the district today.

In another incident of exchange of fire with the police, three naxalites of the People's War escaped near Pathapalem in Kanaganapalli mandal. The police seized a .12 bore gun and two hand grenades among other material from the scene of the encounter. When contacted, the Superintendent of Police, Anil Kumar, told The Hindu that six special police parties were sent for combing operation today morning on specific information that naxalites were moving around in Venkatapuram area.

A police party on spotting two youth coming from Nasanakota side asked their identity and told them to stop. But the two started running after opening fire at the police. In the exchange of fire that ensued on the outskirts of Venkatapuram, a 17-year-old naxalite was killed and another escaped, taking the crowd gathered there as a cover.

Though the police is yet to identify the slain naxalite, the local people stated that he could be one Kuruba Chandra of Kalikivandlapalli in Chennekothapalli mandal, who had participated in the killing of a former naxalite at Ramagiri yesterday.

He is learnt to be a member of one of the four action teams of the PW working in the district. A gun and a hand grenade were seized from his possession. Later, the police searched all the houses in Venkatapuram, including the house of the former legislator of TDP, Paritala Ravindra.

In the second incident at Pathapalem, three naxalites belonging to the PW, two men and a woman, opened fire on the police after spotting them. They escaped when the police retaliated. The police seized a grenade, kit bag, food, radio and other material from the site.
