Trouble in BJP over seat-sharing

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, MARCH 24. The BJP move to give up the Malakpet Assembly seat in favour of the TDP in the seat-sharing between the two parties triggered strong protests from party men with one of them threatening self-immolation near the residence of the Union Minister and senior BJP leader, Bandaru Dattatreya, here today.

The seat-sharing accord also had its echo on the city BJP unit with the office-bearers, including the president, Venkatamani, quitting en masse over the move to surrender Malakpet and for not seeking more constituencies in the capital. The State leadership began a damage control exercise to placate the hurt feelings of city leaders.

Several supporters of Kallem Bal Reddy, State BJP Kisan Morcha general secretary, staged a sit-in before Mr. Dattatreya's residence demanding that the seat, represented by the State BJP president, N.Indrasena Reddy, in the dissolved House, be retained. Mr. Dattatreya sought to pacify them saying that nothing had been finalised yet, and suggested that they should also represent the issue to Mr. Indrasena Reddy.
