MYSORE, MARCH 24. In the light of the reported deaths of three elephants caused by anthrax in the Nagarahole National Park, the Forest Department plans to vaccinate more than 30,000 domesticated animals in the vicinity of the forests. The Forest Department, after a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner, decided to vaccinate domesticated animals on the periphery of the forests in H.D. Kote, Periyapatna, and Hunsur taluks. A press release issued here by the deputy conservator of forests, R. Raju, says that the decision was taken after confirming that elephants died of anthrax. Two elephants died in D.B. Kuppe Range and one in the Metikuppe Rang, and tests proved that they had contracted anthrax, the release adds. It says that anthrax was detected after the death of an elephant in D.B. Kuppe Range in January. The release says that vaccination of animals in the periphery of the forests has begun, and all domesticated animals between Kutta and Badaga villages in Kodagu district have been vaccinated. The Forest Department personnel have been directed to keep a watch on animals that may have possibly contracted the disease. They have been instructed to submit a report if any animal is found to have anthrax. Dr. Raju says that though there are signs of the presence of anthrax in the area, the spread of the disease has been contained.
