BJP, JMM chiefs restrained from contesting poll in J&K
By Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR,
MARCH 24.
The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has restricted the presidents of the State units of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Jammu Mukti Morcha, from contesting the coming general elections.
Admitting a public interest litigation petition filed by the Jammu and Kashmir Students Welfare Association, through its president Nissar Ahmed Wani and general secretary Javed Iqbal, Justice Muzaffar Jan directed the State unit BJP chief, Nirmal Singh, its spokesman, Hari Om, and the JMM State unit president, Varinder Gupta, not to participate in the election process, till objections were filed and considered.
Justice Jan passed the orders after the counsel for petitioners argued that the students were suffering as the two leaders were also holding teaching posts in University of Jammu and were not paying attention to work as they were busy with electioneering.
The next hearing of the case has been fixed for April 14.
Mr. Singh is a reader in the History Department at the Jammu University, while Mr. Hari Om and Mr. Gupta teach history and physics respectively in the same university.
