Strengthen mental health of students, teachers told

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI, MARCH 24. A unique training programme for human resource development through `innovative approach in teaching and learning technology,' held here today for the benefit of teachers of middle and high schools, enabled the participants to realise the importance of inculcating positive attitude, skill and knowledge among the student community.

This was the maiden HRD programme organised by the Directorate of School Education under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (education for all) project.

Teachers drawn from the Tiruchi Corporation middle schools, Government and aided schools from all blocks in the district underwent the training.

Vasanthi Ranganathan, a counsellor consultant of the Genius Education and Learning Systems (GELS), Chennai, who was the resource person, said the programme was aimed at building the confidence of the teaching community.

The focus was on imparting training to the teachers for protecting their self-esteem and sensitising the learners.

She said the teachers possessed a commanding influence on the students. They should focus on strengthening the mental health of students, as it would go a long way in removing the fear psychosis that haunts them.

A self-esteemed teacher would not commit a mistake. They should feel that they have a large chunk of youngsters who were willing to learn, provided they were guided in the right direction.

The students should be told that they have lot of opportunities and advised to grab them. When students become aware of the opportunities, their information seeking ability would automatically improve, she added.

The Chief Educational Officer, V. C. Rameswaramurugan, in his inaugural address, stressed the importance of teachers updating their knowledge to keep the students abreast of the latest developments taking place throughout the world.

The participants should take special initiative to see to it that the benefits of this programme reached the students. The Education department has proposed to organise similar programmes in the district at regular intervals to cover more teachers.

The District Elementary Education Officer, E. Thammanan, spoke.

Later, Ms. Vasanthi explained the uses of abacus, concepts of attitude and discipline, and the experience of a student in relation to the teachers.
