THANJAVUR MARCH 24. Congress cadres, most of them belonging to the erstwhile Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), staged a demonstration here today, condemning the selection of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, and tried to burn the effigy of the All India Congress Committee general secretary, Kamal Nath, who is in charge of the party affairs in Tamil Nadu. The agitation was held near the Sivaganga Park. The party district president, Nanji Varadarajan, who led the agitation, alleged that Kamal Nath had betrayed the sincere workers, who were members of the erstwhile TMC. They raised slogans, praising the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president, G.K. Vasan. When the members assembled at the party office on West Main Street, the police informed them that they would not be allowed to burn the effigy, and that they could only stage a demonstration. Even as a group of leaders were staging a demonstration, a few cadres tried to burn the effigy of Kamal Nath nearby. The police seized the effigy and doused the fire. The district treasurer, S.P. Anthonisamy, the State vice-president, Lakshmi Albert, Laura Mahendran, a former councillor, the Thiruvonam panchayat union chairman, Suryaraj, and the Youth Congress leader, S. Sitaraman, participated in the agitation.
Mayiladuthurai
Supporters of Mr. Vasan today burnt an effigy of Mr. Kamal Nath at Mayiladuthurai, to protest the selection of candidates for eight Lok Sabha constituencies. The demonstrators accused Mr. Kamal Nath of having prepared a one-sided list of candidates, and said he should be removed as in-charge of the TNCC affairs.
Pudukottai
A section of Congress cadres burnt the effigy of Mr. Kamal Nath at Pudukottai. The cadres, led by the district secretary, Thalapathi Manickam, staged the protest in front of the party office, the police said.
