Ashish, Shalu hog the limelight

KOLKATA, MARCH 24. Ashish Kumar and Shalu Mishra of Uttar Pradesh stole the limelight on the final day of the 17th sub-junior National gymnastics championship at the SAI, Eastern Centre, here on Wednesday. Ashish, who helped UP win the team title and took the all-around individual championship, picked up three more gold and two silver medals in the apparatus championship.

Shalu, also of UP, grabbed two gold medals and a silver in the apparatus competition after having figured prominently in the UP girls' team triumph and winning the all-around title on the penultimate day on Tuesday. Ashish, the 14-year-old class eight student of Moreena Convent School in Allahabad, won gold medals in floor, pommel horse and parallel bars. His silver medals came from vaulting table and roman rings.

Shalu, an 11-year-old class six student of Bishop Johnson School in Allahabad, took the gold medals from floor exercise and balancing beam while finishing runner-up in vaulting table. Dipa Karmakar of Tripura and Riya Mukherjee of Bengal took the honours in vaulting table and uneven bars.

Jimmy Raj (AP) 8.100, 3. Prasanta Debnath (Tri) 7.980. Roman rings: 1. Prasanta Debnath 8.775, 2. Ashish Kumar 8.400, 3. Devesh Kumar 8.125. Vaulting table: 1. S. Vinay Chand (AP) 8.20, 2. Ashish Kumar 8.012, 3. K. Jummy Raj 8.00. Parallel bars: 1. Ashish Kumar/Shashwat Patel (MP) 9.40, 2. Prasanta/Debnath 9.225. Horizontal bar: 1. Shashwat Patel (MP) 9.075, 2. Devesh Kumar 9.050, 3. Sarvesh Chand Varma 9.00.

Girls: Vaulting table: 1. Dipa Karmakar (Tri) 7.900 points, 2. Shalu Mishra (UP) 7.625, 3. Gayatri Verma (UP) 7.450. Uneven bars: 1. Riya Mukherjee (Ben) 8.45, 2. Manu Divadi (UP) 8.42, 3. Apoorva Srivastava (UP) 8.30. Balancing beam: 1. Shalu Mishra 9.00, 2. Santosh Rani (Pun) 8.93, 3. Apoorva Srivastava 8.83. Floor: 1. Shalu Mishra 9.03, 2. Pooja Rawat (UP) 9.00, 3.
