By Our Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram March 24. The Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi fellowships and awards for artistes from various fields were given away by the Chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, Kavalam Narayana Panicker, at a function held here today.

The function started with a `Panchavadyam', followed by `Gurupooja', in which 15 artistes were honoured by the cine actor, Nedumudi Venu, by offering them `ponnada' and `dakshina'.

The noted singer and music director, K.P. Udayabhanu, the Kathakali artiste, Kavungal Chathunni Panicker, and the veteran actress, Kozhikode Santha Devi, received the Akademi fellowships.

The Sangeetha Nataka Akademi awards were received by N. P. Ramaswami and Mathangi Sathyamoorthy (Carnatic singers), T.V. Ramani (violin), Kadanad Gopi and Cherthala A. K. Ramachandran (mridangam), Vadakara Krishnadas and Darsan Raman (light music), A. A. Chandradasan, Kozhikode Sivaraman and V. Chandrasekharan Vaidyar (drama), Kalamandalam Vasu Pisharodi and Thonnakkal Peethambaran (Kathakali), Nirmala Panicker (Mohiniyattam), Ammannur Kuttan Chakyar (Koodiyattam), K. Dwaraka Krishnan (Kaniyaarkali), Niranam Rajan (Kathaprasangam), Backer Edakkazhiyur (Arabanamuttu), Nilambur Pradip Kumar (magic) and G. Madhavikkutty (Thiruvathira).

The Endowment award instituted for the student securing the highest marks in the Gaanabooshanam examination in the State was presented to E. Vrinda Varma while V. Sushama Kumari won the endowment award for the student topping in the Gaanapraveena course.

It is the art that is honoured when an artiste is honoured, said the film director, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, in his inaugural address. Several art forms of the State are unknown to the younger generation. It is the duty of senior artistes to instil in the younger generation an abiding interest in traditional music and dance forms, he added.

Delivering the Swati Tirunal memorial lecture, Mr. Nedumudi Venu emphasised the need for including at least the basic details of traditional dance and music forms of Kerala in the educational curriculum. The age-old temple art form, `Kottippaattu seva' was performed by Payyannur Sankara Marar, followed by a percussion ensemble by the veteran mridangam artiste, Korambu Subramanian Namboodiri, and his disciples.
