dated March 26, 1954: C.R. wants to retire

Mr. C. Rajagopalachari, Chief Minister, informed the Legislative Assembly in Madras on March 25 that since his present illness he had entertained a desire to be relieved of his office of Chief Minister. "I do wish to be relieved", he said, "and I must make the best arrangements possible". Looking pale and weak, a woollen shawl thrown round his neck and shoulders, Mr. Rajagopalachari walked slowly along the corridor into the Assembly Hall, a little before 10.30 a.m. There was a spontaneous outburst of cheering from all sides of the House, and even the galleries, at his attending the House. It is believed that Rajaji will communicate to the Congress High Command his desire to relinquish office in view of his poor health and, as soon as their approval is received, tender the resignation of his Cabinet to the Governor.
