Trading charges

Sir, — The BJP's charge that the Congress has not yet been able to project its prime ministerial candidate is irrelevant. India is a parliamentary democracy where the Prime Minister is elected by the winning party from among the elected members. The people do not go to the polls to choose their Prime Minister. The BJP had better give up this baiting.

Sham Sankar,

Sir, — Thanks to the BJP's harping over Ms. Gandhi's foreign origin, Rahul Gandhi has entered the electoral fray and Priyanka Vadhra is likely to join him soon. It seems Ms. Gandhi has brought the `son of the soil' to the electoral arena only to silence her critics. As for the BJP, which said all along that it was not scared of Ms. Gandhi, it now says that it is not worried about Rahul Gandhi.

H. Ghouse Baig,
Tiruchi, T.N.

Sir, — I am amused at the noise being made by the DMK and the Congress over the criticism of Ms. Gandhi's foreign origin. Questioning the propriety of Ms. Gandhi to become Prime Minister does not amount to an attack on her personal character and conduct. It is a matter of national interest.

In foreign countries, when a person is in politics, even his or her personal habits are commented upon and it is not considered personal. The latest example of this is the issue over the health and drinking habits of Charles Kennedy in Britain.

M.N. Sundararaman,
Chennai

Sir, — This refers to the charges and counter-charges made by the DMK and the AIADMK on people's issues. Both have been in power long enough and both have failed to work out a long-term solution to Tamil Nadu's water shortage. Can we expect a concrete step from a future government?

R. Madhavan,
Salem, T.N.
