Level-playing field

Sir, — The Election Commission has prescribed many do's and don'ts in the Model Code of Conduct to ensure a level-playing field. But the concept of a level-playing field in elections is a myth.

With control over the levers of power, the ruling party does have an edge over the Opposition. And there is the anti-incumbency factor to the Opposition's advantage. The money and muscle power that the major players command is way beyond the reach of smaller ones. Where is the level-playing field?
