Anand holds Bareev in blindfold match

NEW DELHI, MARCH 25. A 25-move draw with Evgeny Bareev kept Viswanathan Anand ahead after their blindfold fifth round match of the Amber blindfold and rapid chess tournament at the Hotel Grand in Monte Carlo on Thursday.

In the other two matches of the first set of blindfold games, Veselin Topalov drew with Francisco Vallejo in 48 moves before Peter Svidler shared the point with Loek van Wely in a rook and pawn ending stretching to 53 moves.

Anand, playing from the white side of French Defence, followed the theoretical lines where the knights get exchanged by the 12th move. Anand then chose to trade one of the rooks by the 16th move. Anand castled on the queen's side and easily nullified Bareev's aggressive designs on the king's side. The players saw the futility of continuing and chose to reserve their energies for the rapid game later in the day.

The results:

Fifth round (blindfold): Viswanathan Anand drew with Evgeny Bareev; Veselin Topalov drew with Francisco Vallejo; Peter Svidler drew with Loek van Wely.
