Khaleda sees plot to overthrow her

By Haroon Habib

DHAKA, MARCH 25. Speculation is rife in Bangladesh on the assertion of the main Opposition party, Awami League (AL), that the BNP-led four-party alliance Government would "fall by April 30". Amid a political scenario that might become further confrontational, the Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia, has alleged that, "They (AL) are out to unconstitutionally remove the elected government and legitimise an undemocratic force."

At a huge rally in Dhaka recently, Ms. Zia warned of stern action against any effort to dislodging her Government. The League's general secretary, Abdul Jalil, said the Government would fall. He said, "However, Awami League neither thinks or believes in the change-over of the Government through any means other than the democratic way."

The Khaleda Zia Government looks uncomfortable in the wake of the revolt led by the former President, Badrudouzza Chowdhury. It is also under sharp criticism from western donors who recently expressed their reservation about the Government's denial of constitutional rights to form association and repression on political opponents.
