`AIR nurturing talent of young artistes'

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, MARCH 25. The annual music competition conducted by the All India Radio led to identify and nurture talent of young artistes, said the clarinet maestro, A.K.C.Natarajan.

Distributing prizes to the winners of the `AIR Carnatic music competition 2003' at a function held here recently, Mr. Natarajan said the AIR was instrumental in popularising artistes of repute and ensuring standards of different forms of music.

A number of renowned musicians had served in the AIR as staff artistes.

Norms of the AIR music competitions left no room for complacency ensuring that only talented artistes emerge successful even in the preliminary stage of the contest.

The Station Director, K.Vageesh, said the competition was divided into two categories to encourage those talented in Hindustani and Carnatic music and they were held at New Delhi and Chennai respectively.

Winners would be given special status with which they could present their programmes without any audition test.

In all, nine winners in classical, vocal, light vocal, veena, thavil and flute contests were honoured on the occasion. Their individual performance will be broadcast from April 3.
