Alliances don't go well with party cadre

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, MARCH 25. The sealing of the Congress-Left and TDP-BJP alliances has left several sections of the party cadre disappointed, except in the CPI(M).

Several segment-level leaders of the Congress, TDP and the BJP are reportedly planning to quit their respective parties. In its alliance with the Left parties, the Congress left Uravakonda to the CPI(M) and Dharmavaram to the CPI. On the other hand, the BJP has retained Kadiri segment as part of its alliance with the TDP.

Allocation of Dharmavaram Assembly segment to the CPI has left many a Congress aspirant and the CPI camp dejected. While the Congress aspirants have withdrawn their efforts ruing the alliance, the CPI leaders have accepted the offer with a pinch of inevitability.

Talking to The Hindu a senior CPI leader said they were better prepared for Anantapur and their next choice was either Kalyanadurg or Singanamala. However, a resolute section in the district Congress has deflated the CPI bid to be in the race from Anantapur.

It may be mentioned here that a Congress aspirant for the Anantapur Lok Sabha seat had told senior party leaders that it would be wiser for him to stay away from the contest if two segments in the parliamentary constituency were given to CPI and CPI(M) respectively.

Another senior Congress leader, who is said to be sore over allocation of Dharmavaram to the CPI, is learnt to have told the in-charge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh, Ghulam Nabi Azad, that coupled with Penukonda it will have adverse impact on the Hindupur Lok Sabha constituency.

The BJP leaders of Hindupur are said to be protesting the allocation of Kadiri to BJP instead of Hindupur. Meanwhile, several TDP leaders of Kadiri segment are also opposing the allocation to BJP.

TD leaders quit

The allocation of Kadiri segment to the BJP led to the resignation of several TDP leaders on Thursday. According to information reaching here, the former ZP vice-chairman, Kulasekhar Reddy, the former RESCO chairman, V. Gangi Reddy, the mandal conveners -- Viswanatha Reddy, Venugopal Reddy, Srikanth Reddy, Srinivasulu Chowdary - and the husband of Gandlapenta MPP (Padmaja), Raghava Reddy, quit the party.

Several other leaders too are planning to quit, it is learnt. Meanwhile, the TDP activists led by Baba Fakruddin, of the minorities cell, staged a `rasta roko' in Kadiri protesting the allocation to BJP.
