Prisoners on fast in Patna jail

PATNA, MARCH 25 . Altogether 75 undertrial prisoners at the Patna City Sub-jail today went on a fast-unto-death demanding either their production in the court or a shift to the Beur Central Jail.

Sources at the jail said here that the prisoners were agitating for the past several days and proceeded on an indefinite hunger strike this morning. Of the 225 prisoners lodged there, 75 were lodged in connection with offences related to railways and were languishing there for the past several years for want of their production in the railway court. The sources said that majority of the prisoners who proceeded on fast-unto-death have been detained in the jail even beyond the term they would have been awarded by the court for their offences.

The prisoners were not being produced in the court for want of security guards, prisoners' van and other related infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the jail authorities informed the district administration and the higher authorities of the jail. They also contacted the railway court and requested it to issue an order for transferring the 75 railway prisoners to the Beur Central Jail. The court was likely to release the related order by this evening.

The sources further said that all efforts to convince the agitating prisoners went in vain as they were adamant on their demands saying that the earlier order of the railway court issued on December 28 last to shift some of the railway offenders to Beur Central jail had yet not been executed.

Meanwhile, the jail doctors examined the fasting prisoners. -- UNI
