Elangovan sees outside hand

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MARCH 25. E.V.K.S. Elangovan, former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president, suspects the hand of "hirelings of rival parties" in the "well orchestrated, so-called protests" against the draft list of party candidates for the Lok Sabha elections.

Talking to the media here today, he said, "True Congressmen will never agitate against party leader Sonia Gandhi or burn effigies of top functionaries. The way these protests and demonstrations were organised a couple of days ago clearly points to outside elements indulging in this activity to tarnish the image of the party."

Referring to the opposition to those who were rejoining the party, Mr. Elangovan said, "The Congress has always welcomed those who have returned to the party. We welcomed Kumari Ananthan, the late Vazhapadi Ramamurthy and, more recently, the entire Tamil Maanila Congress. It should be the same for others."

The prime objective of the party now was to ensure the victory of the alliance in all 40 constituencies in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, said Mr. Elangovan.
