Canteen staff rally

NEW DELHI MARCH 25. The All India Defence Civilian Canteen Employees Union (AIDCCEU) organised a rally at Jantar Mantar today for securing the rights of Defence canteen employees.

The AIDCCEU demanded that the Government implement the Supreme Court's judgement recognising the rights of these employees by bringing their salary and allowances at par with Central Government employees. They also wanted speedy execution of the Apex court's ruling calling for an end to harassment of the Defence canteen employees, dismantling of the bonded labour system and the issuance of identity cards.

The AIDCCEU claimed that a detailed memorandum of the meeting would be submitted to the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Mega health care show

NEW DELHI MARCH 25. The Capital is all set to play host to a unique mega health care show in which 21 countries are expected to participate. To be held at Pragati Maidan, the Medicare India 2004 would focus on three prominent sectors of the medical industry -- healthcare, dentistry and laboratory. The participating countries include by Canada, America, U.K., Germany, France, and China.

There will be 16 scientific seminars, talks organised by the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) on the World Health Organisations theme "Safe Road". There will also be a panel discussion on "Is advertising by medical professional a taboo, unethical or a necessity".

Professionals and experts from India and abroad will converge as delegates and discuss emerging issues in cardiology, radiology, ethical issues in organ transplant and transporting critically ill patients.

Dance recitals

NEW DELHI MARCH 25. Artistes from the oriental folk dance theatre "Leela" presented two concerts that included Russian as well as Indian dances at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture here on Tuesday. The colourful concert "Rhythms of Southern Russia" and the Bharatanatyam performance amply proved that these Russian artistes were not only adept in dances of their own country but also in the traditional Indian classic dance of Bharatanatyam.

For the Indian dance connoisseurs, this was a rare opportunity to watch not just a spectacular treat of Russian dances but also Ukrainian, Caucasian and Cossack dances.

The repertoire of the troupe from Rostov-on-Don showcased scintillating dance forms of the Greeks, Tatars and Armenians. Before performing in the Capital, the Russian troupe had performed in Chennai, Coimbatore, Thiruvananthapuram and Mumbai.

Soloist Elena Konitchsheva, presented "Pranava-Karma" and the classic Bharatanatyam "Varnam" besides an item based on Rabindrasangeet. A choreographic composition based on the popular Hindi film song "Akhiyon Se Goli Mare" and a variety composition "Indians and Russians: Let Us Dance Together" also regaled the audience.

Telephones shifted

NEW DELHI MARCH 25. About 2, 800 telephone numbers working from Tughlaqabad RSU (AXE-10) exchange will be transferred to Tughlaqabad D1 (EWSD) main exchange on Friday.

The changed telephone numbers have codes 2606, 2607, 2608 and 2609 and will cover the area comprising the TBD village, TBD Extension, Kalkaji Extension, Amedkar Nagar, Dakshin Puri, Khanpur and a part of Sangam Vihar. The new exchange code is 2996.

According to the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited release, all the affected subscribers have been informed about their new numbers and the procedure to use STD/ISD. Subscribers having STD /ISD facilities will have to reactivate these facilities.

In case of faulty line or any other inconvenience, the Divisional Engineer can be contacted on 26097474 or Sub Divisional Engineer on 26055566.

RI for I-T officers

New Delhi March 25. Two Income Tax Department officers, including Income Tax Deputy Commissioner, have been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of three years for accepting bribe from a person about ten years ago.

The Special CBI Judge, Pratibha Rani, also imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000 each on IT Deputy Commissioner Shivlal and IT Inspector Ravinder Kumar Mirg who were caught accepting bribe from Chabil Das in 1994.

According to CBI, the Income Tax Department had received a complaint against Das and had entrusted the two officers with conducting an inquiry. The two demanded a bribe from Das for a favourable report.

They were caught red handed while accepting the bribe in a trap laid by the investigating agency following a complaint by Das.
