BANGALORE, MARCH 25. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) officials have said that Anopheles mosquito that causes malaria is not present in the city. There were no new cases of malaria, they said. G. Lokesh, Chief Health Officer of the Mahanagara Palike told The Hindu that one person from Banaswadi who was reported to have died of malaria on March 19, was actually a resident of Mangalore and had contracted the disease there. Mangalore was malaria-endemic, he said. "We have done detailed analysis which proves that the malaria vector Anopheles mosquito is not present in the city. Most of the cases reported are from other parts of the State," he said. As many as 16 cases of malaria were reported in the city in the last two months and the patients had contracted the disease in other parts of the State, including Kolar, Chamarajnagar, Mangalore and Gulbarga. One person was admitted in Victoria Hospital for treatment for malaria two weeks ago, and had been discharged, the hospital authorities said. Authorities in the Indira Gandhi Institute for Child Health said that two confirmed malaria cases were reported this year at the institute, but there had been no deaths. The Mahanagara Palike officials have requested the people to undergo a blood test for malaria, if they have fever.
