KOCHI, MARCH 26. The third Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme will be held here on April 4. A district task force meeting held here today discussed the arrangements for the day. The Kochi Mayor, C. M. Dinesh Mani, district panchayat representatives, Kudumbashree representatives and officials from various Government departments, attended the meeting called by the District Collector. The State is on a high alert on polio since the confirmation of a polio case in Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu on March 15. The health authorities believe that the wild polio virus could be within circulation in the State. Usually the State participates only in the first two pulse polio programmes. But the oral vaccine is given five times in rest of the country as part of the immunisation programme to eradicate the virus during the "low virus transmission rate" period. This time the State has decided to participate in all the five programmes as a precautionary measure. The next two phases of the year's immunisation programme will be held in September and November. The programme is over and above the routine immunisation programme. The pulse polio programme in many other States where polio cases continue to be reported was spread over the year five times to maintain the immunity status of children under five years. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu took part in the five programmes last year since at least one case was reported in these states. The health authorities would release a CD on Saturday for the polio awareness programmes.
