WASHINGTON, MARCH 26. The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Israel for the assassination of the Hamas spiritual leader, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. While 11 of the 15 members favoured the resolution, three abstained. The U.S. has said the resolution did not denounce the Hamas for the suicide bombings against Israel. "This Security Council does nothing to contribute to a peaceful settlement when it condemns one party's actions and turns a blind eye to everything else occurring in the region," said the American envoy, John Negroponte.

AFP reports from Ramallah: The Palestinian Authority today said the U.S. veto would `encourage' Israel to pursue its policy of assassinations.
