Vegetation in Nilgiris mountains ablaze

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, MARCH 26. Dried up vegetation along the Nilgiris Mountain Rail (NMR) route caught fire when burning coal flew from the steam engines of an NMR passenger train and a goods train fell on it. Coal from the engine of the train carrying tourists fell on dried up trees and bushes at two spots between Kallar and Coonoor stations. The fires were immediately put out.

In the afternoon, it was the engine of the goods train that spewed burning charcoal on the vegetation at a number of spots between Kallar and Hillgroves stations and at five places between Hillgrove and Coonoor.
