TIRUPATI, MARCH 26. Students of Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV) boycotted classes and held a dharna on the varsity campus here on Friday, demanding justice to a student who made a futile bid to commit suicide. Mastan Bi, a first year student of Social Work had abstained from classes for 15 days on health grounds. Though she submitted a medical certificate, the department head, Rajyalakshmi, barred her from attending the examination. When the student brought the issue to the notice of the dean, Veena Noble Das, Rajyalakshmi allegedly abused her in public, which apparently forced her to take a heavy dose of sleeping pills. The enraged students of the all-women university staged a dharna demanding justice to the girl and action against the HoD. The Vice-Chancellor, R. Madhavi, who visited the dharna site, announced that Mastan Bi would be permitted to write the examination. She also ordered an enquiry into the matter.
