Bank aid for self-help groups

TIRUPATI: The Union Bank of India conducted a meeting of SHGs here on Wednesday, where the bank's Chairman and Managing Director, V. Leeladhar, disbursed loans of Rs.30 lakh to members of 48 SHGs.

The CMD said the bank received trophy from the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, recently for excelling on this front.

Earlier, the bank's first ATM in the temple town was inaugurated on Tilak road by TTD EO, Ajeya Kallam, where Mr.Leeladhar announced his bank's tie-up with Bank of India, Indian Bank, National Bank of India and Western Bank of India, by virtue of which customers of all those banks can transact at this ATM.

BPCL drill

KURNOOL: The LPG bottling plant of the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) here on Thursday conducted a drill to assess the preparedness of the staff in the event of mishaps. The Joint Collector, Mukesh Kumar Meena, witnessed the exercise. The Inspector of Factories, Praveen Kumar, the Fire Services Officer, Balaraju, and staff of the Gowri Gopal Hospital took part in the mock operation along with the security staff of the plant. The Territory Manager, J. Mahender Reddy, supervised the operations. The security officer, M. Kishore, and the sales officer, Ch. Nageswara Rao were present.

RTC time table

TIRUPATI: The APSRTC's time table on the services pertaining to Chittoor district was released by Y.Vijayakumar, the corporation's executive director for Cuddapah and Nellore zones, at a function here on Friday.S.Nagaraju, regional manager, Tirupati, was also present on the occasion.

Plea to expedite inquiry

Cuddapah: The Awaaz district convenor, S. Magbul Basha, and member, M. Basha, said the Vigilance and Enforcement enquiry into alleged misappropriation of A.P. Minority Finance Corporation funds for rehabilitation of minorities in Cuddapah town affected by flashfloods was moving at a snail's pace. They urged the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, to ensure an expeditious enquiry.

CPI(M) dharna

KURNOOL: Supporters of the CPI(M) staged dharna at the Collectorate on Friday urging the district administration to take immediate steps to mitigate the drinking water problem in the city. The party district secretary, Mr. T. Shadrak, and the State committee member, M.A. Gafoor, urged the officials to take steps for supplementing the water supply from the Jurala reservoir.

They presented a memorandum to the district Collector, Ajay Jain, and the commissioner, K. Venkatrami Reddy.

Singhal seeks Jeeyar's blessings

VIJAYAWADA: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad international president, Ashok Singhal, participated in the `Krishna Vasanthotsavam' celebrations on the banks of the Krishna on Friday. He took part in the `nadee puja' and `go puja' performed by Sri Tridandi Srimannarayana Ramanuja Chinna Jeeyar Swamy. Mr. Singhal sought the blessings of Chinna Jeeyar after the puja. The Krishna Vasanthotsavam is being conducted for nine days from Sunday last as part of Ugadi celebrations.

JD(S) to contest two LS seats

HYDERABAD: The Janata Dal (Secular) on Friday announced its second list of candidates to contest two Lok Sabha (Cuddapah and Secunderabad) and 24 Assembly seats. Releasing the list, K. Prabhakar Reddy, general secretary, did not rule out an alliance or seat adjustment with other parties.

Praja Party first list out

HYDERABAD: The Praja Party has said it will field candidates from all the 42 Lok Sabha and 294 Assembly constituencies in the State in the elections. Its president, E. Giri Yadav, released the first list of 32 candidates here on Monday. The second list would be released in next couple of days, he said. Mr. Yadav charged the Telugu Desam Party and the Congress with ignoring the interests of backward classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Ex-IPS officer holds road show

KURNOOL: The former IPS officer, T. Srinivasulu, organised a road show in the Kodumur constituency on Friday. Accompanied by his wife, Sarojini, retired professor of law, Mr. Srinivasulu appealed to voters to vote for the Congress in the elections. Mr. Srinivasulu and his wife began their road show in an open jeep at Pedapadu village on the outskirts of Kurnool. Later, they passed through Ulchala, Parla, L. Pet, K. Nagalapuram, Amadaguntla, Gorantla, Chillabanda, Merugudoddi, Maramdoddi, C. Belagal and other places. Mr. Srinivasulu, however, restrained from projecting himself as candidate of the party. Mr. Srinivasulu planned to contest from the Kurnool Parliamentary constituency but he faced still resistance from Kotla Suryaprakasa Reddy. If Mr. Suryaprakasa Reddy's name is cleared for the Kurnool Lok Sabha seat, Mr. Srinivasulu is a likely candidate for the Yemmiganur Assembly seat.

Mala Mahanadu's veiled threat

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Mala Mahanadu has threatened to field candidates in the elections if the Congress does not support its cause. Its district convener, J. Trimurthulu, and general secretary, R. Suribabu, at a press conference here on Friday said the organisation had offered complete support to the Congress in the elections in return for a promise to reverse the TDP Government's decision to categorise the Scheduled Castes if the former came to power. But there was no response from the Congress, they said.

Congress BC leaders upset

VISAKHAPATNAM: Backward classes leaders of the Congress have criticised the party leadership decision to field a non-BC candidate from the Visakha-II Assembly constituency.

"Backward classes are in majority in Visakha-II accounting for nearly 80 per cent of the electorate. It will be appropriate to nominate a BC candidate from the seat if the former Chief Minister, N. Janardhana Reddy, is keen on winning the Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat,'' the City Congress secretary, Malla Eswara Rao, said at a press conference on Friday.

Padalu to be CPI(ML) nominee

VIZIANAGARAM: The CPI(ML) New Democracy is fielding Biddika Padalu, a former dalam commander, from the Naguru (ST) constituency. Padalu, who has been sentenced for life by a sessions court, has been released after remaining in Visakhapatnam and Rajahmundry Central Prisons for over four years following his appeal in the High Court. Padalu is now a member of the All-India Kisan Mazdoor Sangh, according to a press release issued by P. Prasad, New Democracy leader, here.

Writ plea against appointment

HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, comprising Chief Justice, Devinder Gupta, and Justice G. Rohini, on Friday admitted a writ petition challenging the appointment of Hussain Ali Beg as Chief Executive Officer of the Andhra Pradesh Wakf Board. The writ petition has been filed by the Sufi Council of India.

Heat wave subsides

Hyderabad: Heat wave conditions subsided in Telangana region on Friday while dry weather prevailed in other parts. Day temperatures were significantly above normal at a few places in Rayalaseema and the highest temperature of 42 degree Celsius was recorded by Cuddapah and Nizamabad.
