Miryalguda civic chief quits TDP

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, MARCH 26. The Telugu Desam Party received a serious setback in the Miryalguda Assembly constituency today after the Municipal Chairman, Ch. Vijay Kumar, and two other local leaders announced their resignation from the party.

In a strongly-worded letter addressed to the TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, they said that his decision to `import an outsider' to contest from Miryalguda at the cost of loyal workers had undermined their `self-respect,' the plank on which they had joined the TDP in 1982.

Mr. Vijay Kumar also resigned from his post of president of the A. P. Chamber of Municipal Chairmen on the ground that he was elected because of the party's backing.

Garlapati Niranjan Reddy, State organising secretary, Telugu Yuvatha, and Md. Khasim, vice-president, TDP's State minority cell too quit the ruling party today. Their anger was directed at the leadership's decision to field P. Chandrasekhar Reddy, who recently quit as IG of Police to join the Telugu Desam Party, from Miryalguda.

A senior party leader in Nalgonda district, Mr. Vijay Kumar reminded the TDP chief that loyal TDP workers had stood by him steadfastly in 1995 when he raised the slogan of injustice to the cadre. But, he realised that slogans and reality were far removed from each other, he added.

He also recalled that TDP followers had sincerely worked for the CPI (M) candidate when the Miryalguda seat was given to that party. It was quite unfortunate, therefore, that the leadership had brought an outsider ignoring the claims of locals. Accusing the TDP president of playing into the hands of some district leaders, he said he too had self-respect and would not remain in the party.
