HASSAN, MARCH 26. The reported denial of the Congress ticket to former MLAs, A.T. Ramaswamy and B.R. Gurudev, to contest from Arkalgud and Sakleshpur Assembly constituencies has annoyed the followers of the two leaders in Hassan district. Presidents and members of various local bodies in Sakleshpur constituency have submitted their resignation to the primary membership of the Congress on Friday. A similar decision was taken by the followers of Mr. Ramaswamy in Arkalgud. Followers of Mr. Gurudev blocked the National High Way-48 for some time in protest against the decision of the party High Command. On learning that Mr. Ramaswamy has been denied nomination to contest from Arkalgud Assembly Constituency, a large number of his followers assembled near the Taluk Congress Committee office in Arkalgud town and protested against it. The taluk Congress president, A.R. Janardhana Gupta, said that the party President, Sonia Gandhi, had failed to keep her promise made during the convention of block presidents in Hubli recently to honour their recommendations regarding nomination of candidates. Those who attended the meeting resolved to resign from the party. A meeting would be held on March 28 to finalise the future course of action. According to sources, Mr. Ramaswamy has been denied the ticket to accommodate A. Manju, who joined the Congress after his expulsion from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Members and presidents of various local bodies in Alur and Sakleshpur have submitted their resignation here on Friday to the primary membership of the Congress in protest the reported denial of the party ticket to B.R. Gurudev to contest from Sakleshpur Assembly Constituency to accommodate B.B. Shivappa, who joined the party recently.
