Pondicherry

PONDICHERRY, MARCH 27. Law and order has deteriorated in the Union Territory as murders and fire accidents were becoming a routine occurrence, Lalitha Kumaramangalam, Bharatiya Janata Party nominee for the Lok Sabha election, said today. Condemning yesterday's murders inside a police station at Mudaliarpet and at the Chetty Street-Bharathi Street junction in almost quick succession, she said it was the duty of the Government to maintain law and order and ensure security to the people and merchants. In a release, she said it was mind-boggling that a handful of culprits had a free entry into the police station and killed a man by hurling a country bomb.
`Tone up vigil'
The former Local Administration Minister and TMC leader, `Theni' C. Jayakumar, today called upon the Police department to tone up its vigil in the Union Territory. Addressing a media conference here, he said had the authorities initiated steps as soon as reports of grabbing of property and other disputes were brought to the notice of the police such incidents would not have occurred. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, holding the Home portfolio should intervene.
