Concern over lack of armed sentries at police stations

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, MARCH 27. The incident of culprits getting into a police station and murdering their rival inside the station at Mudaliarpet yesterday should be an eye-opener for the law and order machinery to review the present measures available to curb violence and to effect improvement, the former Superintendent of Police and vice-president of the Pondicherry Retired Police Officers Association, N. Natarajan, said today.

He said the absence of armed sentries at police stations had been taken advantage of by the anti-social elements.

(A gang rushed into the police station and murdered S. Kumar alias Jayakumar by hurling a country bomb at him while he was seeking protection in the station yesterday.)

Mr. Natarajan said such incidents only justify the plea made from various quarters that Goondas Act be enforced in Pondicherry. Although several legislations were in force they lacked teeth to curb the activities of anti-social elements. The moment a culprit committing a heinous crime was let on bail, the rival group acted out of vengeance. Thus a retaliatory system of settling scores was taking place quite often in Pondicherry. The Goondas Act should be enforced which would not let criminals out on bail.

Mr. Natarajan said all entry points at the State border should be taken up for intensive vigil. Criminals with lethal weapons were getting into Pondicherry from other districts and escaped after committing the crimes such as murder in the Union Territory. People were thus living in a constant fear of insecurity.
