It's Jadhav's day out

By G. Viswanath

PUNE, MARCH 27. Maharashtra has set an uphill task for Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy Plate Group final. Thanks to a superb double century by left-handed Dheeraj Jadhav (251, 536b, 28x4s), the home team put up a formidable total of 501 in the first innings on the second day of the National championship.

It was Jadhav's second double century in a row and he was the last man dismissed, an hour after the tea interval. The downfall of Madhya Pradesh opener Mudassir Pasha took Maharashtra a step further in taking control of the match.

It was Jadhav's day once again at the Nehru Stadium. He faced the first ball of the match on Friday and undertook a mission for twelve hours and eleven minutes before falling leg before to leg-spinner Yogesh Golwalkar. Raised on near-perfect batting turfs, Jadhav has developed a good technique to deal with the seamers and spinners on flat pitches and has a range of shots on the off-side. What has to be seen is how he shapes in conditions that assist swing and on pitches that afford movement off the seam.

The pre-lunch session of the second day's proceedings was interrupted twice to change the new ball. The frequent ball change did not affect the concentration of the overnight fourth wicket pair that had already raised 67 runs in the third session on Friday. Dhruv Mohan (77, 115b) hit nine fours to take the partnership to 158 before leg-spinner Narendra Hirwani struck to remove the right-hander and also Ranjit Khirid.

After the fall of the fifth wicket, Jadhav farmed the strike to complete his double century in a workmanlike fashion. The lower order and tail contributed just 31 runs in a total of 115. Hirwani persevered to take four wickets while Golwalkar was rewarded with two in the end, including that of Jadhav, who ought to have impressed the two national selectors Sanjay Jagdale and Kiran More.
