Kottayam phone directory released after seven years

By Our Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM, MARCH 27. After seven long years, the BSNL formally released the telephone directory for Kottayam SSA at a simple function here today.

The former Supreme Court judge, K. T. Thomas, received the first copy. In fact, this is the first comprehensive directory being released by the BSNL. The last one was released in 1997, when it was still the Department of Tele-communications. The long gap was served by two supplementary directories in 1999 and 2000.

According to K. S. Srinivasan, general manager, BSNL, Kottayam, the distribution of the directory would be completed in two phases. Subscribers in Kottayam and Changanassery taluks would be covered during the first phase starting from March 29. While customers at Kottayam, Ettumanur and Changanassery would be able to collect their free copy of the directory from the respective customer centres, customers under other exchanges would have to collect their copies from the respective exchanges.

The second phase of distribution of directories for customers in Pala, Kanjirappally and Vaikom SDCAs will commence from April 15. Copies of the directory would be available for sale at Rs. 90 per copy at all Customer Service Centres, he said.

The single volume, 900 page directory includes 2,46,539 entries and is corrected up to November 30, 2003. According to Mr. Srinivasan, as on February end this year, there are 2,53,347 working lines, out of which nearly 1.5 lakh connections were added during the past five years. The tele density of the SSA is 12 per 1000.

Reacting to a question, Mr. Srinivasan said the 29 base stations for BSNL mobile service, now functioning in the area, would be expanded by 33 new stations by June and by the end of the next financial year, this would be increased to 100 more base stations, providing almost carpet coverage throughout the SSA. The present jamming of lines may continue till May, he said.

According to him, major portions of the waiting list is proposed to be wiped out by the WLL service. The 18,000 line MSC based WLL, expected by December this year would cover Kottayam, Vazhappally, Kumarakom, Kudamaloor, Ettumanur, Thalayolaparambu, Vakathanam, Ayarkunnam, Kangazha, Kanjirappally, Karukachal, Kurupanthara, Mamood, Manimala, Mundakayam, Pala, Poovarani, Ramapuram, Thrikodithanam, Vaikom, Vazhoor, Ponkunnam and Erumeli.

In addition, BSNL would introduce Managed Leased Line Network (MLLN), direct Internet access system and IVRS based trunk booking during the coming year, Mr Srinivasan said.
