BELGAUM, MARCH 27. People from Raibag taluk of Belgaum district thronged the Rajapur weir near Miraj in Maharashtra in the early hours of today, and opened the gates of the barrage across the Krishna to release water to their drought-hit villages. Sources said that when they reached Mangawati village in Athani taluk of Belgaum district on their return journey, a rival group threw stones at them. Many people were reportedly injured. The reason for the stone pelting is not known as senior officials of the district could not be contacted. Reports said three vehicles were set on fire. Seven persons from Raibag taluk were arrested following the incidents. The Deputy Commissioner of Belgaum, B.S. Palaksha, and the Superintendent of Police, Sunil Agarwal, have rushed to the spot. Raibag and Athani taluks are facing a severe drought. Although the district administration is supplying water in tankers, this has proved inadequate. Sources said the Karnataka Government had requested Maharashtra to release water from the Rajapur weir.
