Village secy. gheraoed

Cuddapah: Members of DWCRA gheraoed the village secretary, Harinarayana, on the MRO office premises in Nandalur on Saturday, decrying non-release of part of the rice component promised despite completion of construction of individual lavatories four months ago.

Earlier, the mandal parishad president, K. Saibaba, assured to release the rice quota within a week.

Bombs seized; two arrested

KURNOOL: The police arrested two persons on Saturday near Banaganapalli and seized 30 crude bombs. They were identified as M. Sivarami Reddy and Chennaiah.

Loans for small farmers

KURNOOL: The district president of the Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham, T. Narasimhaiah, has urged the district administration and bankers to distribute loans to small and marginal farmers. When it required an investment of Rs. 2,000 crores, banks came forward to provide Rs 683.86 crores to the farm sector, which was one third of the total requirement, he noted.

Plea to turmeric traders

Cuddapah: The Selection Grade Secretary of Cuddapah agricultural market committee, D.S. Krishna, in a statement on Saturday urged turmeric traders to stop procurement from March 30 to April 1 on account of Srirama Navami and annual accounts closing.

Arrangements for APPSC test

NELLORE: The necessary arrangements have been made for Sunday's Group-I preliminary examination being conducted by the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC). In all 5,653 candidates are expected to take the exam at 17 centres.

Similar arrangements are being made for the District Selection Commission examination for teachers being held on April 4 and April 5.

Free asthma clinic

KURNOOL: G. Kullayappa, retired professor of chest diseases in Kurnool Medical College, conducted a free asthma and chest clinic at Gowri Gopal Hospital here on Saturday. The Additional SP, Vigilance and Enforcement, Ilias Seth, inaugurated the clinic.

BJP workers stage protest

NELLORE: A group of functionaries belonging to the BJP staged a demonstration before the Fifth Town police station here demanding justice to the family of a woman, who reportedly committed suicide unable to bear the alleged harassment of her in-laws.

The police intervened and defused the situation.

Fervour marks temple festival

TIRUPATI: Thousands of devotees took part in the `rathotsavam', the car festival, on the penultimate day of the annual Brahmotsavam in the Sri Kodandaramaswamy temple here on Saturday. Amid chanting of `Govinda' and `Rama' and to the tune of percussion drums, devotees pulled the flower-bedecked wooden chariot carrying the presiding deities around the four mada streets encircling the temple.

The temple precincts resembled a village shandy, with hawkers and vendors setting up makeshift shops. The annual fete would come to a close on Sunday with `Chakra Snanam' and `Dhwajavarohanam'.

Five killed as ambulance carrying body hits lorry

NELLORE: Five persons were killed when the ambulance they were travelling by rammed into a stationary lorry near Kakutur, 13 km from here, on Saturday. While three persons died on the spot, two others succumbed to the injuries at the Government Headquarters Hospital here.

Police said that the ambulance, with the body of K. Narasaiah (50), was coming from Chennai and proceeding towards Pasunuru in Nalgonda district. The deceased were identified as Sailu (65), Lakshmidevamma (55), cleaner of the ambulance, Rajasekhar (22), M. Veeramma (50) and K. Rukkamma (60). Nine others are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Rs. 3-lakh reward on naxal's head

Cuddapah: The Police Department put up wall posters in Rayachoti town on Saturday promising a reward of Rs. 3 lakhs to those giving information on the whereabouts of a People's War (PW) naxalite, Chadipiralla Narasimha Reddy, belonging to Bandapalle in Ramapuram mandal, who reportedly killed his teacher and Lakkireddipalle Market Committee chairman, P. Vasudeva Reddy, recently. The posters depicted the scene of killing and Narasimha Reddy's photograph. Another poster was put up condemning naxal violence.

Naxals gun down TDP activist

KARIMNAGAR: Naxalites belonging to the People's War (PW) shot dead the husband of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) sarpanch in Ansanpalli village of Tadicherla mandal on Saturday. Police said that two armed naxalites stopped the sarpanch, Leela Rani, and her husband, Komurelli (35), a party activist himself, when they were proceeding on a bike on the village outskirts and shot him dead.

Two fake naxals arrested

Cuddapah: The Rajampet police have nabbed two pseudo naxalites, who allegedly addressed threatening letters to traders and extorted money from them. The Rajampet Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), T.V. Rajagopal, told newsmen on Saturday that the impostors -- L. Rangaiah and Gopal -- belonging to P.M. Kondapuram village of Yellanur mandal in Anantapur district, were nabbed last night when they tried to intimidate a gold merchant.

Nellore TDP leader joins Congress

Hyderabad: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) spokesperson of Nellore district, K. Srinivasulu Reddy, joined the Congress on Saturday. Accompanied by the former MLA, Anam Ramnarayan Reddy, he addressed a press conference and accused the TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, of adopting authoritarian methods to suppress democratic voices within the party. He said he was joining the Congress to preserve his self-respect (`Atma Gouravam').

Dry weather prevails in State

Hyderabad: Dry weather prevailed in the State on Saturday.

Day temperatures fell at a few places in Rayalaseema and at one or two places in Coastal Andhra and Telangana. The temperatures were above normal at many places in Telangana and Rayalaseema and normal in Coastal Andhra.

The highest day temperature for the 24-hour period ending this morning was recorded by Cuddapah and Nizamabad and it was at 41 degree Celsius.

The weather on Sunday will continue to be dry.
