NEW DELHI, MARCH 27. The family of a businessman was robbed of a huge amount of cash and jewellery by a gang of dacoits who barged into their residence at Gandhi Nagar in East Delhi in the wee hours of Saturday. According to the police, a group of six persons entered the house of Ranjit Verma, a resident of Jain Mandir gali in Gandhi Nagar, around 4 a.m. and took hostage the inmates of the house. The police said the accused entered the house using a gallery in the back where some construction had been going on. They first went into a room after breaking the iron mesh door and woke up Ranjit's son, Sanjay Verma. The muffled intruders then forced him at gunpoint to get the doors of all the rooms opened. Sanjay's brother, Ajay, Ranjit, who owns a saree printing workshop at Karawal Nagar in North-East Delhi, and other family members were brought into one room and tied up by the robbers. The robbers then opened the almirahs and ransacked the house before escaping with Rs. 5 lakh in cash and large number of gold and silver ornaments. They stayed in the house for about 30 minutes. Nobody was injured in the incident as the family did not offer any resistance. However, they have told the police that they talked in Hindi, but with a Bengali accent. A case of dacoity has been registered at Gandhi Nagar police station and further investigations are on.
