Mangalore
By Our Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE, MARCH 27. A web portal, daijiworld.com, has come as a boon for a large number of Mangaloreans across the world. Thanks to the initiative by Walter D'Souza, editor-in-chief of the site, people outside keen on following events back home, can do so at the click of a mouse. Daiji in Konkani means "relation'' and the site, in its truest sense, is promoting the same, online. The site was initially launched as daijidubai.com on January 14, 2001. Mr. D'Souza and a group of writers of the Daiji Dubai Writers Forum got together with a view to promoting and encouraging awareness of culture and tradition. The forum felt it could awaken latent sentiments of its compatriots and make them feel the need to enrich their traditions. Mr. D'Souza told presspersons here on Friday that the website had become synonymous with speed, accuracy and variety. These factors had made the portal popular around the globe. News from different parts of the world was flashed on the site, at times, even before other forms of media did so. The site had correspondents in Mangalore, Mumbai, the U.S., Canada and West Asia. Noting that the site was given a facelift recently, Mr. D'Souza said it now had added features such as picture of the day and thought for the day. He said the site, which initially received 100 "hits'' a day on an average, was receiving more than 22,000 "visitors''. Mr. D'Souza said the website was available at www.mangalorenews.com and www.konkandaiz.net as well. An office would be inaugurated at 102, Divya Deepa Arcade, I Floor, Bendoor Well, Mangalore, on Sunday.
