BANGALORE, MARCH 27. The junior doctors of Bangalore Medical College, who include house surgeons and postgraduate students, have decided not to go on strike from Monday as planned earlier in protest against the college's failure to pay their stipend. They have been promised that funds for payment of their stipend would be released by the month-end. Representatives of the students' association of the college told The Hindu here on Saturday that the Director of Medical Education, Ramananda Shetty, had assured the junior doctors that they would get their stipend for February and March by March 31. A confirmation to this effect had been forwarded to the students' association by the financial division of the Department of Medical Education, they said. Shivaprakash Sosale, general secretary of the association, said the junior doctors would continue to work wearing black badges till the funds for payment of stipend were released. If the stipend was not paid till April 1, the junior doctors might be forced to go on strike. He said a meeting of the superintendents of the hospitals affiliated to the college such as Victoria Hospital, Vani Vilas Hospital, Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, Venkateshwara Institute of ENT, SDS Sanatorium and Minto Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and the students' representatives would be held on April 5 to discuss the lack of facilities and other problems.
