By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MARCH 27. Eight persons were injured, one of them seriously, in a major fire that broke out in a small unit manufacturing fan coils and related accessories in a residential area at Fateh Nagar under the Sanathnagar police limits late on Saturday night. According to the local residents, at around 9 p.m. the entire colony plunged into darkness following a power breakdown. The workers present in the unit reportedly lit a candle and continued with their work.

It is suspected that the candle fell on the `thinner' (inflammable liquid) kept there and within no time the fire spread across the entire unit, located on the ground floor. On seeing the flames engulfing the unit, a local resident, Chandrasekhar, picked up a bucket full of water and rushed near the unit to put off the flames.

However, he was caught in the flames and suffered severe burns. A few others who gathered and tried to put off the flames, but they too suffered burns. A six-year-old boy, Trinath, who was playing nearby was also injured. Meanwhile, a fire tender from Sanathnagar arrived and extinguished the flames within a span of one hour. Two motorcycles parked near the unit were partially burnt.

Besides Chandrasekhar and Trinath, the other injured were identified as - Shanker, Manoj, P. Bhasker (worker), Siva Krishna, Narasimha Rao (father of the child) and Nageswara Rao. Locals said the property belonged to one Govindachary, who resides in Secunderabad. He had let out the portion to the owner of the unit Narasimha Rao, about a year ago. The injured were being treated at Remedy Hospitals, Balanagar. The condition of Chandrasekhar is said to be serious.

Angry residents said that a complaint was lodged with the local police and the Pollution Control Board as hazardous chemicals were being stored in the units located in the midst of residential colony, but no action was taken.
