This Day That Age
Egypt appears moving towards a showdown in the conflict between President Naguib and his Deputy Premier, Colonel Nasser over the country's future. Colonel Nasser, heading a "revolt" against General Naguib's plans to end military rule in July in favour of an elected Constituent Assembly, declared on March 28: "The situation is out of my hands... I can no longer control the army officers." As the Revolution Council and civilian Cabinet Ministers met for a crucial session under General Naguib, a crowd several thousand strong surged against the steel doors of the Prime Minister's office. They shouted: "We want the Revolution to continue" and "no political parties and no corrupt parliaments."
