Snared by a smile
NEW YORK,
MARCH 28.
Criminals hiding under a disguise can now be caught through their smile. Mapping the muscles that shape a smile can lead to better face recognition systems, researchers have suggested.
Two photographs are taken in quick succession, asking the subject to smile for the camera. A computer is then used to analyse how the skin around the subject's mouth moves between the two images. The software does this by tracking changes in the position of tiny wrinkles in the skin, each just a fraction of a millimetre wide.
But criminals can avoid detection by wearing make-up or dark glasses, the Nature quoted researchers at Stony Brook University, New York, as saying. PTI
