Enumeration of wells in southern districts

MADURAI, MARCH 28 . The Ground Water Circle of the Public Works Department (PWD) has taken up a census for enumerating wells and borewells in the southern districts.

The task, which is the groundwork for implementation of the Tamil Nadu State Ground Water (Development and Management) Act, 2003, began in December last, and has reached the final leg.

The Superintending Engineer, N. Arunachalam, said that in the door-to-door enumeration, details of every well and borewell were being collected. Residents were asked to fill up a form with details such as the name of the house owner, address, number of wells/borewells, their use — domestic, irrigation or industrial and the mode of water drawing (through electric/diesel motors).

The Executive Engineer, A. Sivanandam, said that besides revenue details such as the patta number and the electricity service connection number, the dimension of wells, the size of borewells were collected. The PWD was also gathering information on the commercial utilisation of wells, including for packaged drinking water.

The PWD has urged the residents to cooperate with the enumerators in completing the work before this month-end. People can also furnish the details over telephone to the PWD officials.
