ALAPPUZHA, MARCH 28. The repair work on the steam turbine at the Kayamkulam combined cycle power project of the National Thermal Power Corporation(NTPC), which had been switched off two days ago following technical problems, is likely to begin on Monday, according to NTPC officials. Technicians of Bharat Heavy Electrials Ltd. (BHEL) led by a deputy general manager have arrived at the station to pinpoint the snag. The station has three turbines for power production. While two turbines function on Naphtha, the third turbine functions on steam. The two turbines that function on Naphtha are working full time now. The NTPC officials said that according to initial indications, a transformer of the steam turbine had developed problems leading to its shutdown. They said that the repair work was expected to be completed before March 31. Till then the station would generate power with two turbines, they said. If the repair work was not completed by April 1, the transformer would have to be removed to the Bhopal station of the BHEL, said the sources. Meanwhile, it is pointed out that any delay in repairing the turbine would lead to heavy liability for the State, which buys power from the station at the rate of Rs 3.90 a unit. The NTPC would be forced to raise the tariff to over Rs 5.30 a unit if the steam turbine was shut down, said the sources.
