Ban on sand-mining in Bharathappuzha

PALAKKAD, MARCH 28. The District Collector, Sanjeev Kaushik, has banned sand-mining in the Bharathappuzha and its tributaries from April 1, 2004. He told The Hindu recently that the order was issued as it was found that the reckless sand-mining had destroyed the river and resulted in acute drinking water problem in the district.

He said that the ban on sand-mining in the Bhavani and its tributaries would also be issued shortly. He said that the ban order would be strictly implemented and no sand would be allowed to be removed from `kadavus' after the expiry of its auction period on March 31 2004.
