Protect child rights, judge tells NGOs

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MARCH 28. The Madras High Court judge, M. Karpagavinayagam, has appealed to non-governmental organisations to put up a stiff fight for protecting the rights of children and moulding them into ``torch-bearers'' of the nation.

``I appeal to the NGOs to help to alleviate the sufferings of the underprivileged children and chalk out programmes, bringing them into the mainstream of society and make them self-reliant'', he said participating in the golden jubilee of the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW), Tamil Nadu.

The judge gave away long-service commendation certificates to staff members who had put in more than 25 years, and released a souvenir.

Presiding, Sarojini Varadappan, vice-president, ICCW, Tamil Nadu, hailed the yeoman service rendered by the office-bearers since inception of the organisation in 1953.

Andal Damodaran, general secretary, ICCW, Tamil Nadu, and Chandra Thanikachalam, joint secretary, ICCW, called for a mass movement to eradicate all forms of child labour in the State.

A.K. Venkatsubramanian, a retired IAS officer, released an ICCW compilation on ``Children of Tamil and the State Budget - An Analysis 1998-2003''.

Later, an audio cassette on the significance of eradicating child labour was released by Leela Sekar, member, ICCW. Four computers by the State Bank of India were donated to the organisation. Dipshikha Datta, president, SBI Ladies Circle, made a token presentation to the children of the organisation.
