THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 28. The Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan, has alleged corruption in the March 24 Cabinet decision to give Rs. 42 lakhs as rubber export subsidy to Infam. In a statement here today, Mr. Achuthanandan said the decision to release the subsidy was taken with ulterior motives. The Government had rejected demand when the Infam chairman, Mathew Vadakkemuri, staged a sit-in in the Agriculture Minister's office in January, 2002, seeking immediate release of the subsidy amount. The Opposition leader said his information was that more than one inquiry conducted by the Agriculture Department had revealed the Infam claim of having exported 1,500 tonnes of rubber as baseless. The Director of Agriculture had also written to the Infam managing director pointing out that there were serious irregularities in Infam's rubber procurement. Officials in the department had also found that most of the documents relating to Infam's rubber procurement and export were bogus, he claimed.
