Kapus, sarpanches mount pressure on Congress

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MARCH 28. The declaration of the first list for Andhra Pradesh by the Congress last week triggered protest with several party members lodging complaints with the Central leadership over the distribution of ticket.

The complaints varied from the manner in which State leaders went about the selection of candidates both Lok Sabha and Assembly to certain sections of backward community not being considered and other allegations.

For instance, Kapunadu, an organisation for the community said while Kapus and allied community form nearly 25 per cent of the population, the party was not paying much attention to the community in the distribution of tickets.

In a three-page letter to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, the organisation president, Pilla Venkateswara Rao, put forward arguments as to why the Congress should consider giving ticket to the community.

Another organisation, the Andhra Pradesh Sarpanches Association, also sought ticket for sarpanches in the coming Assembly elections. In a press statement, the association president, P. Venkata Rama Reddy, said since sarpanches were in direct touch with the villages, there was a need for efficient among them to enter into the Assembly and work for reform and decentralisation of power.

The association lamented that its earlier demand for allocation of at lest eight Assembly seats did not find favour in the first list and urged the party to give representation in the second list.

There have been protests over finalisation of some specific seats. In the case of the Narsaroapet Parliamentary constituency, several party members sent a petition to the party president, Sonia Gandhi, urging that "no outsider'' be fielded from either the Parliamentary or assembly seats.
